Day #299 Recap (Final Fantasy IX)

Where I Currently Am: Disc 3 Sidequests... (Heading towards Black Mage Village)
Stuff Did Today: So, we found Dagger and saved her as the Invincible (That floating eye spaceship) went and destroyed Alexander. We woke up in Lindblum castle.When we found Dagger, she could no longer talk! Apparently the grief has been too much, etc. So, we're searching for a plan to take out Kuja. To do so, we figure we need an airship. Cid is working on the Hilda Garde 3, but unfortunately he's not smart enough as an Oglop to make a good one... so we take a chance and make up a potion for him to change him back... which certainly made him not an Oglop anymore... it made him a frog. Oops. So, now, we're gonna go search for Hilda so she'll change Cid back. Unfortunately, we have no leads on her location. We do know that Kuja had some Black Mages with him, so we're going to head to Black Mage Village to ask some questions. To get there, Cid gives us a boat.

So, before we go do any of that, we can explore! We go get our friend Choco again and take him to the Chocobo Lagoon and he digs up some more treasures for us... in doing so he changes color a couple of times... first to Red, and then to Dark Blue, now he can pretty much take us anywhere... as long as anywhere isn't the Western continent...

Status & Notes: 

Yay! Sidequest time again! Finally, I really wanted to get my chocobo to Dark Blue so I can pretty much freely explore the world. It makes things a LOT easier. Not to mention, the equipment doesn't hurt either.

I wanted to talk a bit about the story today, becuase it is something I really haven't touched on too much in my playthrough, and since I'm spending time on sidequests anyway, I figured it is as good a time as anyway. I would say, that the story in this game is probably the closest to Final Fantasy IV as any game in the series. Both in content, as well as how the characters are handled. Each character in the game certainly has his own class, you can almost draw parallels between the games. Steiner -> Cecil, Freya -> Kain, Vivi -> Palom, etc. Now, obviously the classes have been updated since then. Summoners now use white magic instead of black... Zidane is more of a classic Thief than a Ninja, etc.

Also, it took almost 25 hours before we've really had a point where we can go and explore. Most of this game is very linear. This, also, very similar to Final Fantasy IV. Obviously, the intent of this game was to give it more of a classic feel as opposed to the modern feel of the previous two games. To do this, we've obviously gone back to a medieval setting, and focused heavily on summons through the first two discs. Also, we have the classic "different levels of bad guys" thing going on, with Brahne eventually leading to Kuja.

The one thing I will say against this though, are the story sections are really really long. For some reason, this is something I notice more playing through Final Fantasy VII, but now I'm just wondering if that's because it is so much of a difference compared to the SNES Final Fantasies, and now I'm more used to it after going through VII and VIII. I mean, there's probably a good hour-plus section at the beginning of Disc 3 there where the only battles you fight are the mistodon battles with Beatrix and Steiner... and the optional Tantarian boss. Still though, the characters are so fun and the story so engaging that you really can't complain about getting so much of it.

Alright, goals for today. The first thing I'm going to do is finish digging up the Chocographs I can get to right now. Once that's done, I'm going to give a visit to the Qu Marshes and catch some more frogs. After that, its going to be gathering up some new Blue Magic. Then, there's a few places to go loot, and some new and important items to get at the Auction House... if by some miracle I get all of this done, it is off to the Black Mage Village.... lets see how it goes.
