Day #508 Recap

Current Game(s): Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XI

Current Play Time(Final Fantasy X-2): 65:21 (+)
Current Play Time(Final Fantasy XI): 53:18 (+)
Total Play Time - 1,137:13 (+)

Current Game Overs(FF X-2) - 4
Current Deaths(FF XI) - 9
Total Game Overs: 67

Where I Currently Am(FF X-2): Chapter 5!!! Creature Creator Time... Part 2! (82% Complete, Bestiary 70% Complete)

Where I Currently Am(FF XI): Windurst Mission 3-2... or at least doing the prep for it... ugh... this is going to take longer than I thought

Stuff Did Today (FF X-2): Finished up a few more fiend's tales, then headed to the Thunder Plains where the show and Shinra's sphere screen seem to have attracted a bunch of Rhyos to the area. After dispatching them, we found there was a big hole by the far lightning tower. We jumped down and found Cid at the bottom.

This little excursion allowed us to capture 6 new fiends in the arena, so I did... and started training them.

Stuff Did Today (FF XI): Bought a crapload of maps to nearly bankrupt me... then went about some quests for the Rhinostery. First, I retreived a sack from Mhaura with a delivery for the little guy who can't say more than 3 words in a sentence... next I retreived some water from the back of Giddeus from the birdmen which they use to enchant the little street light flowers. Finally, the leader of the Rhinostery told us to bring him anything... interesting... we find. Well, we found someone with a Purple Ribbon that made them hear voices... that seems interesting. After bringing it to the Rhinostery, and a whole bunch of time... we found out it belonged to someone who had died who misses it very much, and we should go return it to them...

Knowing where we need to go... time to start the grinding.

Status & Notes:

As I said yesterday, the Fiend Arena in X-2 is kind of done in chunks, based on different side areas you open. There's a few, getting deeper in Via Infinito certainly helps, entering the final dungeon unlocks some. Finding the chocobo cave, the cactuar cave. There was actually more than I thought that unlock after finishing the Thunder Plains episode, thus its time for Creature Creator part 2 of Chapter 5.

In Vana'diel, as I said above, I bought all the maps I could in Windurst, thus nearly bankrupting me, but at least I don't need to worry about maps for like ever. The quests I did were pretty quick, and of course didn't involve having to kill anything. So, I was able to finally get to the big quest I talked about yesterday. If I take this path to get to the mission, I'm going to have to grind up to about level 60. I'll probably get to about 40 and hang out in Jeuno and see if anyone will be willing to help me get through the Three Mage Gate... I'm not particularly holding my breath though.

Day #507 Recap

Current Game(s): Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XI

Current Play Time(Final Fantasy X-2): 65:21 (+)
Current Play Time(Final Fantasy XI): 53:18
Total Play Time - 1,137:13 (+)

Current Game Overs(FF X-2) - 4
Current Deaths(FF XI) - 8
Total Game Overs: 67

Where I Currently Am(FF X-2): Chapter 5!!! Creature Creator Time... Part 1 (82% Complete, Bestiary 68% Complete)

Where I Currently Am(FF XI): Windurst Mission 3-2... or at least doing the prep for it... ugh... this is going to take longer than I thought

Stuff Did Today (FF X-2): Finished up the Fiend's Tales for Zalamander, Volcano, Tindalos, Dark Elemental, and Dolmen... then just caught the rest of the new fiends I can do before sidequests

Stuff Did Today (FF XI): Did my reputation grinding for Windurst and started the Rhinostery quest chain.

Status & Notes:

Well, this mission is going to be harder than I thought. Yeah, I found the quest you need to get past the door without using 3 mages or someone with a portal key sure... however, I missed the part where you need to go through a bit of a quest chain with the Rhinostery. The problem is, one of these quests is VERY difficult. Like I'm going to need to be somewhere in my 60s to do it. Well, the only other option is to hang out in Jeuno and see if I can get someone to help me... which I might do, I don't know. Either way. This is certainly not turning out to be the type of game where I care if I'm doing a quest or mission on level or not. Again, the questing and levelling seems to be completely separate, and as long as you are powerful enough to complete the quest that is all that matters... quite a bit of a difference from WoW.

In X-2, I was able to grind up a few monsters, about half of what I need for right now. Once I'm done, we'll do the Thunder Plains and open up the cave. I'm not planning on doing Via Infinito as early as it they have it in the walkthrough... there's nothing that really makes it mandatory to do it this early in chapter 5, and I'd much rather do all the easier stuff before I go all the way through there. The next big chunk of monsters will be after we unlock Cactuar Hollow.

Day #506 Recap

Current Game(s): Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XI

Current Play Time(Final Fantasy X-2): 65:21 (+)
Current Play Time(Final Fantasy XI): 40:56 (+)
Total Play Time - 1,124:51 (+)

Current Game Overs(FF X-2) - 4
Current Deaths(FF XI) - 6
Total Game Overs: 67

Where I Currently Am(FF X-2): Chapter 5!!! Creature Creator Time... Part 1 (82% Complete, Bestiary 65% Complete)

Where I Currently Am(FF XI): Windurst Mission 3-2... or at least doing the prep for it.

Stuff Did Today (FF X-2): In Kilika, things have smoothed over between New Yevon and the Youth League, but the Youth League guy still won't open the gate to the woods. Dona's had enough and convinces him that this standoff is over and gives him his orders. So, the woods are now open and the people of Kilika rush into the woods. They make it to the temple, where Barthello has been waiting for Dona. Dona gives Barthello her rehearsed speech, and Barthello repledges himself to Dona, and everyone is happy, yay....

While in Kilika we took the time to catch some Squatter Monkeys and give them to the lady obsessed with them... now we finally have the Garmnet Grid that would've been awesome to have back in Chapter 1... yay.... Also, the Youth League base is finished, so we took a ride over and found an Invincible accessory waiting for us.

In Besaid, there's a BABY!!!! However, Wakka doesn't know what to name him... so, we decided to screw him and walk over to the beach. When we make it there, Beclem is just about to leave. He has a sphere to give us though... and the need to show off his awesome Blitz skills before he heads out. We return to the village, and meet Wakka just before we get there. We show him the sphere Beclem gave us and it was from Chappu! Chappu confesses that the rumor he gave Wakka about a sphere with their parents was just a hoax. Wakka convinces us to stay until nightfall, when he throws a huge party. Here, Wakka finally has a name for the baby, Vidina. Wakka worries that he won't be a good father, but Lulu has faith in him... yay...

In Mi'ihen, Rin finally has figured out who's behind all the mishaps on the highroad. Apparently, when Rikku jumped off a high ledge it misconfigured a machina behind the travel agency, and landing on another machina caused it to go haywire... whoops. Rikku's punishment, cleaning up the highroad... yay, community service! Our reward, a Ragnarok accessory!

Now, before we head to the Thunder Plains, it's time to catch some monsters.

Stuff Did Today (FF XI): Levelled up White Mage a little bit... just because I'm stalling... I'll explain below.

Status & Notes:

Starting in Vana'diel today. I decided I'd stall for a day and just level up White Mage for now? Why? Well, for the next mission, if I'm going to take the back way in, as I explained a couple days ago, I need to start a quest that requires a certain level of reputation. Now, the best way to level Windurst reputation is by buying a whole crapload of items from Bastok. However, this item is only available for purchase if Bastok is in 1st or 2nd in conquest... this past week, Bastok, of course, was in 3rd. So, I'm waiting until later today when the conquest standings update to see if Bastok will get out of 3rd. If not, I can use some of the Sparks of Eminence I've accumulated instead... I'd rather not, but it wouldn't be the biggest deal, just figured it was worth a day's wait.

Finsihed a few more episodes in X-2. Really, nothing that involved anything other than watching stuff. Now, I need to take a quick break to start catching a couple of monsters. Chapter 5 has a few triggers which make certain monsters available to capture and some to not be able to be caught anymore. The monster I really need to capture now, before I finish the Thunder Plains is the Zalamander. Once you open up the new cave there, it disappears.

Alright, so, one way or the other today, I'm going to grind my Windurst reputation today. I also, will be able to get some X-2 time in today, which will be for finishing up some monster tales.... and maybe going ahead and doing the Thunder Plain episode as well.

Stuff Did Today (FF X-2): None

Stuff Did Today (FF XI): None

Status & Notes:

I know I still owe a new Current Setup for FF XI, but I'm not going to liel its not going to come until tomorrow... I'm probably going to try and change some stuff up a bit. I don't know exactly how yet, but I have until tomorrow to figure that out.

I didn't get to the FF X-2 stuff last night. My father-in-law's staying over, and we were watching stuff.

I do want to thank Live2Play for the Blitzball advice... I still extremely dislike Blitzball in X-2... but at least I now have a game plan for it. Alright, going to get some play time in now, so we'll talk about it tomorrow.

Day #504 Recap

Current Game(s): Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XI

Current Play Time(Final Fantasy X-2): 65:21 (+)
Current Play Time(Final Fantasy XI): 40:56 (+)
Total Play Time - 1,124:51 (+)

Current Game Overs(FF X-2) - 4
Current Deaths(FF XI) - 6
Total Game Overs: 67

Where I Currently Am(FF X-2): Chapter 5!!! Woohoo!!! (77% Complete, Bestiary 65% Complete)

Where I Currently Am(FF XI): Windurst Mission 3-2... or at least doing the prep for it.

Stuff Did Today (FF X-2): None

Stuff Did Today (FF XI): Finished levelling Thief. Switched back to Red Mage and undertook a new mission. We were told not to repeat any news of the Shadowlord's return to anyone... then Ajido-Marujido showed up with the empty Book of the Gods and wanted the Star Sibyl to look at it. Since everyone still thinks he's a traitor we were told to follow him. After some detective work, we found he was heading to Castle Oztroja which is a stronghold of the Yagudo.

We followed him to the Castle which was locked up tightly, then we found a trapdoor which we fell down. Apparently Ajido did as well. We spoke to him, and it sure doesn't sound like he's a traitor. He wants to save Windurst from the coming doom!

Status & Notes:

Finally back to some story in XI. Yeah, its just a long trip between missions all the time, and now we come to an interesting part. The next mission involves going through the Three-Mage Door... meaning you need a Red Mage, White Mage, and Black Mage to open it. Well, crap, right? Yes, you can find someone who's done the quest before and have him open it with a key you get... but there is another way. There's a back way in, which can be opened if you're on a certain quest. Unfortunately, this quest requires you to have a certain level of reputation with Windurst...

So, I did a little research on Reputation, and it seems like another system that's just been oversimplified with time. The initial purpose it seems is that you can do repeatable quests to up your reputation very similar to World of Warcraft. However, in a lot of cases, the items you need to farm for these quests can just be purchased... so, that seems to really defeat the purpose. So, anyway, that's my plan, spend a bunch of time upping my Windurst Rep so I can do this quest.

I do plan on getting some X-2 playtime in today... where I'll probably mostly just be getting a few more Episode Completes and watching the scenes... If I have time I may start some Creature Creator stuff... or maybe even do some PR running. I'd really like to get that out of the way. Also, at some point today or tomorrow I will be doing an XI Current setup, haven't done one in a while.

Day #503 Recap

Current Game(s): Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XI

Current Play Time(Final Fantasy X-2): 65:21 (+)
Current Play Time(Final Fantasy XI): 40:56 (+)
Total Play Time - 1,124:51 (+)

Current Game Overs(FF X-2) - 4
Current Deaths(FF XI) - 6
Total Game Overs: 67

Where I Currently Am(FF X-2): Chapter 5!!! Woohoo!!! (77% Complete, Bestiary 65% Complete)

Where I Currently Am(FF XI): Windurst Mission 3-1... currently levelling up some support classes

Stuff Did Today (FF X-2): Back to those CommSpheres... and the gist is basically the same everywhere you go. Everyone WANTS to go to the concert... the entire Youth League wants to go, even if it means abandoning their posts. The Ronso want to go, but they are busy figuring out what their next move is going to be. Isaaru would like to go, though he's still getting over the fact he's talking into a machina. The Al Bhed would like to com, but they've got a big fiend over at camp. O'aka would like to go, but he's busy at his shop... oh wait. The musicians would like to go, but they've gone and faded out.

Finally, it's time for the concert, but wouldn't ya know it? There's fiends about. Gotta clear out a cave... or at least the Flame Dragon within. So, we come back, and Yuna gets her dresssphere on, and it's singing time. Then the song reacts with the giant sphere screen Shinra set up, and now EVERYONE gets to see the brutal end of Shuyin and Lenne. Well, crap.

Yuna wakes up, and its time to sort all this out. Luckily the dulcet tones of Maechen can help us with that! He explains that the images basically stopped the fighting between the Youth League and New Yevon, and that Lenne was a summoner and called to the front lines during the Machina War... Shuyin, her lover, has been lost to history.

Then, Leblanc finally shows up and gives us a couple of Crimson Spheres which... shockingly actually gives us some insight to what the heck went on between everyone. Okay, so we know that Baralai, Nooj, and Gippal were on the same squad duting the test of the Crimson Squad, and that Paine was recording their test. Well, they went in there, and what they found was the ghost of Shuyin. He possessed Nooj, and the whole thing just ends with a 3-way mexican standoff, and Paine breaking it up.

So, Gippal manages to enhance the signal of a commsphere Shinra through into the Farplane hole. So, we know they're still down there... and figuring out how to deal with Vegnagun.... we're going to go help, but first we need to finish up some business Top Side.

First, we head to Zanarkand, where Isaaru has officially closed down the dome and temple... Maechen still heads over and talks about Vegnagun, which was the perfect weapon created during the Machina War... unfortunately it has some Bad AI and cant distinguish friend from foe... oh yeah, and Maechen died 1000 years ago and is unsent... he forgot about it til he shook Yuna's hand and it reminded him of Lenne.

Over in Luca, it's Blitzball time!!! The Aurochs aren't coming, they're busy babysitting for Wakka's new kid... so he wants the Gullwings to play instead... yay...

Stuff Did Today (FF XI): Got my thief levels up to 25, also, stepped through my first Cavernous Maw to find the old Shadow war still going on.

Status & Notes:

Finally through Chapter 4 in X-2... everything still going as planned really. I'm going to hit a few of the episode completes that are really just cutscenes and then head back to the Monster Arena to catch what I can pre-via Infinito.

Time to talk a little about X-2 Blitzball I guess. I really really don't like it. Mostly because you have absolutely no control over it. Yes, FF X Blitzball was extremely easy since you had so much control and could basically dominate... this though, is really confiusing with the training and what not. I've never really understood how everything works, and I'm going to find myself a really good guide. I don't plan on spending a lot of time on it, however, since the Monster Arena basically usurps it and you can pretty much just get everything from that.

Over in Vana'diel. Couple of things going on. Got some more levelling done. Puts me up to Level 25, so just a few more and I'll be switching back to Red Mage. Also, I was able to head over to Battalia Downs to enter one of the Cavernous Maws. This is basically the second world in FF XI, and I'm going to need to open up the Maws from that side to use as transport, this will be very important for unlocking some of the advanced classes to come.

Day #502 Recap

Current Game(s): Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XI

Current Play Time(Final Fantasy X-2): 65:21 (+)
Current Play Time(Final Fantasy XI): 40:56 (+)
Total Play Time - 1,124:51 (+)

Current Game Overs(FF X-2) - 4
Current Deaths(FF XI) - 6
Total Game Overs: 67

Where I Currently Am(FF X-2): Chapter 4... *continued groan* (70% Complete, Bestiary 65% Complete)

Where I Currently Am(FF XI): Windurst Mission 3-1... currently levelling up some support classes

Stuff Did Today (FF X-2): Continued watching the CommSpheres... let's paraphrase a bit... No one has seen Leblanc, There's a new fiend out in Bikanel desert. Clasko's watching the chocobos. The head of Argent Inc is hiding something behind the Calm Lands Travel Agency. No one is coming to O'aka's shop. No one has seen Tobli. Kimahri can't come to Yuna's concert. EVERYONE is taking a dip in the Mt. Gagazet hot springs...

Meanwhile, over on Mi'ihen Highroad, Rin is having a bit of a problem and we need to help him investiagate using the CommSpheres... we found a bunch of Machina, a baby Chocobo Eater, and some people messing with some stuff in the back... he thinks he's got a good idea of what's going on... we'll find out later.

We headed over to Moonflow to find Tobli, he's running away from his creditors... whoops, apparently his shows aren't making enough money. We chased him a long way... and caught up with him and he agreed to help produce our show, that's going to be in the Thunder Plains... yeah, that's a great idea. Anyway, he sends out an ARMY of Hypellos to promote the thing.

So, we go rehearse for the concert and get a Shmooth Shailing for our troubles (YES, Creature meat!). Its time for the concert, but wait! First, more commspheres.

Apparently, Beclem really doesn't think very highly of Wakka, and has to go back to the Youth League, but doesn't want to leave the Aurochs in charge... and still no baby. Over in Kilika, Dona isn't sure how she wants to handle a reunion with Barthello, and has sent a CRAPLOAD of balloons up to the temple, including one with the commsphere, which Barthello destroys again... Over in Luca, apparently the Goers are training hard for Blitzball season.

Stuff Did Today (FF XI): Got my thief levels up to 18

Status & Notes:

I still hate Chapter 4... really, I could leave this notes section just at that and be satisfied... but I don't think that's satisfactory. I mean, hey, you do get a Shmooth Shailing for doing the rehearsal, and that's pretty awesome to feed to one of my creatures. I am like halfway through Chapter 4 now... there's still a LOT of commsphere stuff to watch. Ugh...

Chapter 5 is going to be kind of interesting since I really CAN'T go to the Calm Lands until the very end, since I'll need the PR points. I'll be interested to see how that works out... might screw up my Walkthrough a bit, though I'll deal.

Over in Vana'diel... not much to say. Apparently I was wrong, Thief learns Treasure Hunter at 15... which is fine, but I still want to level Thief up now so I don't have to deal with it for a while. I'm getting a pretty good amount of Crystals now, so I may try some Synthesis stuff soon. Probably cooking will be at the top of my list to start.  My plan is still to get Thief to 30, then switch back to Red Mage and keep going with the Missions... at some point soon I will start unlocking some of the Advanced classes, and get some levels for those at well. Looking forward to Dancer, supposed to be an awesome support class.

Stuff Did Today (FF X-2): None

Stuff Did Today (FF XI): Did some levelling... finished getting my Warrior levels up to 20 and switched over to Thief, which I'm going to get up to 30.

Status & Notes:

ALright, well, the play time is finally up to date... I've got a current setup for X-2... not that much has changed... (stupid Chapter 4)... I'll get a new Current Setup for XI once I'm back to Red Mage... I really need to work on a better format for that.

As I said yesterday, today will be the beginning of a good X-2 push... finally... back to good Fall network programming that my wife will want to watch instead of needing the PS3. Hooray!!! Today, I'm hoping to get through most of Chapter 4... I really really hate the stupid CommSphere network.

Over in Vana'diel... finished my levelling of Warrior levels... now it is on to Thief levels, which I'm getting up to 30 for now, so I can get the Treasure Hunter trait. This way I can switch to Thief when I want to farm some equipment or gold or whatever. If I can get into the teens today that'd be excellent. Don't worry, we'll get going doing some more missions soon enough.

Status & Notes:

And on the 500th day... I rested... I apologize, it has just been a rough couple of days. Luckily, Fall TV season is starting this week... and once that happens, my wife will want to watch a lot less Blu-Rays and streaming... which means the PS3 will be freed up, so we are really about to get moving on FF X-2. Very good news... I'd say Tuesday will be the start of this.

As for today... not sure, I know I'm going to be busy in RL, my wife is having some dental work done, so she'll be out of comission and I'll be put to work a bit.  I'm sure I'll get a little bit of XI in, and expect a Current Setup tomorrow.

Where I Currently Am(FF XI): Windurst Mission 3-1

Stuff Did Today (FF X-2): None

Stuff Did Today (FF XI): Decided to just do a little levelling up... as a Warrior. Yeah, really just doing it so I can use it as a subclass for Thief... gonna get it to 20 and then switch over to Thief

Status & Notes:

So this morning I was getting a little X-2 in... and I had done quite a few areas in the whole CommSphere thing...and then my daughter decided to hit my PS3 and slightly open up the door to the DVD... yeah, I hadn't saved... ugh... I still hate Chapter 4.

Over in Vana'diel... I do want to get my Thief level up so I can use it to farm gil... but Red Mage and Black Mage just really aren't good pairings for it. I'm not quite ready to start unlocking the advanced classes, so I figure Warrior is probably the best route to go. As I said above, just gonna get Warrior to 20 and then switch over to Thief and get it to about 30 for now. Levelling is immensely quick at the low levels with a trust party.

Alright, just going to leave it here for now. I would've said I'd have some X-2 today, but, unfortunately that got messed up... we'll do some XI. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get up a set of Current Setups.

Where I Currently Am(FF X-2): Chapter 4... *groan* (64% Complete, Bestiary 65% Complete)

Where I Currently Am(FF XI): Windurst Mission 3-1

Stuff Did Today (FF X-2): Cleared out Djose Temple which had a Dark Ixion merged with machina or something like that... I dunno... anyway, the tombs there sucked.... but we fought it and it fell... and unfortunately so did Yuna down one of those holes in the Cloister. There, we ran into Tidus... or not... apparently this lookalike is named Shuyin and is in love with Lenne, who is the spirit in Yuna's Songstress dresssphere... yeah, its dumb.

Anyway, Shuyin is the one who's possessing Baralai. Nooj and Gippal show up to snap Yuna out of it, and then kind of disappear. Ah well... lucky the Spirit of Tidus is there to whistle Yuna back to reality.

So, apparently Spira is going to crap since all the leaders disappeared... so we're going to put on a show... but first Shinra's Commspheres... ugh... Everything's okay in Besaid, Wakka's going crazy waiting for his kid, and the Aurochs are terrible. In Kilika, Barthello is worried about Dona, and Dona is trying to keep the peace... and dreaming of Barthello. In Luca, we're waiting for Blitzball to start!!! In Djose temple... they're worrying about some ancient fiend... and then stealing our commsphere for parts.

Stuff Did Today (FF XI): Headed around to San d'Oria, where they were having a bit of an Orc problem... so we took out their warchief. Then over to Bastok where there was trouble in the mines. We headed down and found our first Battleground where a Seeker summoned a Dark Dragon to take him down... luckily I had my trusted friends to help me take it down.

So apparently these dragons were supposed to be sealed away in the northlands, but the big bad Shadowlord is being brought back or something... but we got a certificate making us an official adventurer... yay...

Status & Notes:

Oh... Chapter 4... oh... chapter 4... *groan* I hate Chapter 4... I really wish I could just do the required stuff and head into Chapter 5... there's interesting stuff there. .. here... we're watching little movies. There's a lot of them too. But you NEED them to get 100%. That's what this is all about after all.

Okay... over in Vana'diel. We made it to Rank 3... Didn't come without a few bumps. I hadn't really played around with the Trust spells too much... and I didn't know there was a 2 minute cooldown on them. So, I summoned them real quick before I went into the battleground... and so when I went into the battleground, obviously they went away... and I tried to summon them again, to no avail since the spell was on CD. Oops, the dragon got me. So, I wasted some gil teleporting back and I did it right.

I do have to say, the Trust thing is really awesome, I can't imagine what this game was like when it first came out. It would've taken forever to kill anything. Apparently after level 30 the monster difficulty goes way up, they really expect you to be with a party. Now, unfortunately you can't use them in some places... but I suppose we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

Today, we'll just be going into FF XI... I'm considering levelling up Thief some in order to have Treasure Hunter... plus I'd really like to just hang out in Ronfaure for a while... so that's probably on today's docket

Current Deaths(FF XI) - 4
Total Game Overs: 67

Where I Currently Am(FF X-2): Time to Finish Chapter 3! (57% Complete, Bestiary 65% Complete)

Where I Currently Am(FF XI): Windurst Mission 2-3

Stuff Did Today (FF X-2): Ex-Crimson Squad down!!!!! Ha ha aha ha!!! Yes, finally took down the Ex-Crimson Squad and then proceeded to farm the Youth League Cup a few times and get myself *4* Shmooth Shailings... which I proceeded to feed to my Chocobo and Battlesnake

Stuff Did Today (FF XI): Finished my Chocobo!!! Also, got the items I needed for my Jeuno and Bastok Mog house exits...

Status & Notes:

So clearly, the method of beating Ex-Crimson Squad was to Vegeta it... think about it for a sec... maybe go look at my setup...  still no??? Okay, fine, I had to get my HP OVER 9000!!!!! That and train my guys to use Vigor... alot... yeah, it takes training... weird little AI system. Basically, the key is just to heal heal heal... and the more max HP you have the more Vigor will heal... that said, this fight still sucks and is a real test of attrition. I had characters die multiple times and had to rely on Full-Life... but the key is that Nooj runs on a set script... Lightfall -> Greedy Aura -> Fireworks -> Attack -> Lather,Rinse,Repeat.... So, make sure everyone's HP is over 5000 before Lightfall. Luckily Fireworks misses alot and you can temper some of the other damage by manipulating your stars... ugh, I still hate it.

The fact is... this fight is SO much harder than ANY other fight in that cup that I'd pretty much recommend looking at the tournament and if Ex-Crimson Squad is there just running away and re RNGing the tournament... it will be quicker than actually doing this fight. Will this change with Chapter 5 items and Garment Grids??? Maybe...  but if I wanted to farm any more right now... this is the strategy I'd go with.

Anyway, today we will be taking on Windurst Mission 2-3... and the first boss battle... interesting... and we will definitely have some X-2 play time where we'll be back with YRP finishing up Chapter 3!!!! Woohoo!!!

Other things to talk about... Square Enix has been front and center at the Tokyo Game Show. The new FF XV demo looks pretty awesome... the bigger news seems to be the release of the FF XIII series on Steam... now I already own XIII and XIII-2 for PS3... and I'm honestly not sure what system I will be playing these on. It may be worth it to just pick up the Steam versions to play it portably... it also makes me wonder how long until Square Enix just starts releasing everything on Steam along side the console versions..,. Also, hearing VERY good things about Theatrythm: Curtain Call... can't wait to get to that game... though it is a WAYS away... anyway, until tomorrow!

Stuff Did Today (FF X-2): None

Stuff Did Today (FF XI): Took to travelling the world... boarded the ferry and travelled to the other continent where I first made way to San d'oria. Here, I picked up some home points and another Trust companion as well as a Mog House Exit. Next, I made the long trip to Bastok, where I was again able to pick up another Trust companion... they didn't have the right flower on sale at the Auction House though to get the Mog House Exit.

I then returned to Windurst, and made way for the Grand Duchy of Jeuno. On the way through the mountains, I stopped to gather some grass from some Crane Flies... I made it to Jeuno, and when I got there, a large crystal appeared in the sky. No one really liked what that could mean. Time froze and someone told me I was chosen by the crystal and I need to gather some stuff... I'll get on that later.

I then made my way to the Chocobo stable, where I started to nurse an abused chocobo back to health...

Status & Notes:

First things first... you've probably noticed. I'm not going to be doing the Current Setups as often anymore... it is just too much work for not enough payout I think.  It was really good when I was moving through games more quickly at the start, and now that I'm playing these games that take so long to complete, it really doesn't always show very much every day. I'm probably going to try for a couple times a week.

Now for a little story. I never really had wanted to play FF XI. I had kind of given my allegiance to WoW, and that was that. Then, one day, I started playing Theatrythm and I got to the FF XI section and I came upon a song called Ronfaure. I found it to be a basic song, but an amazingly catchy song and what could be defined as a quintessential medeival sounding tune. It kind of made me curious, since this was far better than any music I'd heard in WoW....

This brings me to now. Obviously, I still haven't gotten too far in XI, but I've explored a bit now and gone to a few different areas. The layout, so far is a bit disappointing I'd say. Basically, the towns and starter areas all have very good music... I'm not a huge fan of the Scottish music in San d'Oria... I do very much enjoy the Jeuno music and the Windurst music however. Then as you get away from the starter town... its all wasteland. I mean, yeah, maybe something is mountainous, and some are desert... but really, its wasteland...

So, yeah, I've started the Crystalline Prophecy... completely accidentally. I'm not sure how I'm going to handle the different sets of missions, I'll have to figure it out at some point. Next is going to be finishing up the Chocolicense... then starting to work on Mission 2-3. Today though, we will be focusing on X-2! Also, tomorrow I'll get another setup for that, its been a while.

Day #495 Recap

Current Game(s): Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XI

Current Play Time(Final Fantasy X-2): 60:09 (+)
Current Play Time(Final Fantasy XI): 20:24 (+)
Total Play Time - 1,099:07 (+)

Current Game Overs(FF X-2) - 4
Current Deaths(FF XI) - 3
Total Game Overs: 67

Where I Currently Am(FF X-2): Chapter 3 Creature Creator Time!(57% Complete, Bestiary 65% Complete)

Where I Currently Am(FF XI): Mission 2-3

Stuff Did Today (FF X-2): Trained some more... got a boatload more HP for my Chocobo... putting him back to Black Mage lowered his HP under 5000, also got everyone's MP over 900... should be enough for good really.

Stuff Did Today (FF XI): Finished my Black Mage training getting it up to 20... Next I headed over to Mhaura and undertook a collection quest so I could equip a support job... This included a very rare drop off of rabbits and a drop off of a fairly high level ghost that appeared only 15 minutes out of every hour. I eventually finished, levelling up to 26 in my Red Mage in the process. This allowed me to learn Invis, so I undertook Mission 2-1.

Here, the Optistery wanted me to research a very important lost book. They believed a Mithran cat burglar was behind it, so we went and talked to her to see if she had it. She said she had a book and if we retreived a Lapis Monocle for her we could go look at it. We trekked all the way to the Maze of Shakhrami in Tahrongi Canyon and located it among some fossils. We brought it back to her, and she wanted us to meet her at her hideout deep under the Horutoto Ruins. We went there, taking care to avoid all the VERY high level monsters in the area, and there she ambushed us with her posse wanting all my money and equipment! Luckily the Ace Cardians showed up... apparently she stole something important to them. Ajido-Marujido, the leader of the Orastery came and destroyed one of the Cardians, and they departed. We were lucky to escape with our life.

Next, we received a couple of tests from the Aurastery, we had to take a doll with us first to Tahrongi Canyon and then Bururmu Peninsula and had to dispatch 30 creatures within an alloted time... we succeeded both times. Unfortunately, we couldn't return the doll until our time was up, so we took the time to investigate the Trust Magic as well as getting the ability to use our Mog House as kind of a mini-transport system within Windurst. Nice!

Status & Notes:

New interesting system in FF XI... the Trust System... I guess after the game had reached its peak and the population started to dwindle, they created a system in which you could basically have your own personal party! Yeah, that's basically what this does, you undertake quests in which you can collect party members that you summon. I like it!

I kind of went back and forth on what to do next... I finally decided I'm going to travel to the other two nations and do that part of Mission 2-3 next... and THEN I'll level to 30 and do the Chocolicense quest. This way I can collect another couple of Mog Exits and Trust spells.

Over in Spira... remember when YRP was our main party??? Yeah, me neither, the Fiend Arena is far more fun and challenging... anyway... as you can tell above, I'm still working on preparations for the Ex-Crimson Squad fight which I'm really thinking is the hardest fight you can undertake before Chapter 5. I'm getting closer as I have all the MP I need... and am getting close in HP. I have everyone back over 7000... I'd really LOVE to get my Chocobo to Level 99 so I can go ahead and equip a Minerva Plate on it. Once I get through this fight I'm going to get back to the plot...

Where I Currently Am(FF X-2): Chapter 3 Creature Creator Time!(57% Complete, Bestiary 65% Complete)

Where I Currently Am(FF XI): Training up my Support Class.

Stuff Did Today (FF X-2): Trained a bit... was able to take out Nooj and get a 4th victory in the Youth League Cup... now I'm trying to tweak things in order to get through the Ex-Crimson Squad

Stuff Did Today (FF XI): Did a little training... up to Level 18 for Black Mage

Status & Notes:

Alright, back on track a bit today. Did a little work levelling in FF XI... planning on getting Black Mage up to 20 and then I'll start back on my Red Mage and get him up to 25 so I can have the Invis and Sneak spells available to me for the next mission. So there's my short term plans there.

Over in X-2, I first beat up Garik Ronso alot and switched out my Auto-Wall for Auto-Protect, and yeah, that makes a good bit of difference. With this, and a few more HP I was able to take out Nooj. So, I went and tried Youth League Cup again and this time of course Nooj lost and I had a pretty easy track, but I did... so I tried it again, and went up against the Ex-Crimson Squad... which is Nooj, Baralai, and Gippal all at once....  and aargh... this is an annoying fight... here's my strategy though.... first off, I need some more MP on my Chocobo. So, I gotta go bribe some Rune Bracers from Flan Blancos... I'll get on that. Next, I switched Chocobo over to Curaga so it can multi-target so I can at least counter lightfall. I also put MP Absorb back on my Chocobo so I can counter Baralai's annoying MP sapper thing... and then it is just really doing the stars right so I can keep Chocobo my healer and getting max damage output out of Full-auto.

Stuff Did Today (FF XI): None

Status & Notes:

I do apologize, but I am still on kind of a little break here. Why? Well, mostly really just pure RL exhaustion. Also, Diablo III... been having alot of fun in there since the Season began. Finally just got my first Seasonal character to 70 and am now gearing up...

I will probably be toning down my playtime in general for quite a bit. One, I think I've just been going a little too hard for a while now, and probably burnt myself out a bit. Also, there's going to be a bunch of games coming out I'm going to want to play . These include Super Smash Bros. for 3DS... Fantasy Life for 3DS... I'm still considering whether or not I may want to get back into WoW for the new expansion... we'll see for that.

Anyway, today we will get some play time... at least in XI... not sure what the PS situation will be tonight. Again we'll see... so until then!

Status & Notes:

Just want to talk a little about the comment I got today. I was certainly quite aware of how the star system work sin the Fiend Arena in X-2. Its just honestly before this Nooj fight, its never been something I've really had to use. It was really just if I could output enough damage before I died. This is the first fight where healing really matters, so its just something I'm going to need to practice with. Also, I really did go back and forth between whether I wanted to do Auto-Protect and Auto-Wall... in the end I do think you're right and I should go with Auto-Protect... luckily its not a big deal to get that... I can farm it from the Garik Ronso + friends fight in the arena.

Dissidia: Final Fantasy Review

What would happen if you crossed an RPG with a tournament fighter? This is the question that Square wanted to answer when they came out with Dissidia. They crossed the action based one-on-one gameplay and added in a whole lot of customization. Throw in a quickly created plot for why we're bringing together the heroes and villains of the first 10 editions of Final Fantasy and what do you get? Well, let's take a closer look and find out.

The plot of Dissidia: Final Fantasy is as follows. There exists a world of constant conflict with two gods, Cosmos and Chaos. These two are in eternal struggle, however, it seems Cosmos may finally be failing. She recruits ten warriors to seek out the Crystals. They succeed, but in doing so, Cosmos is destroyed as the Crystals actually each contain the remaining essence of Cosmos herself. With Cosmos destroyed, the world is set to disappear into the Void, however the Crystals are able to hold off this apocalypse and give the warriors a chance to reach Chaos itself. The warriors defeat Chaos and are able to return to their home world... however, in defeat Chaos retreats to a place in which he wishes nothing but pure destruction. The warriors must infiltrate this place and defeat him one last time.

That's the main plot, but there are some other points to touch on. The world is populated with mannequins, basically copies of the different heroes and villains of the area. These, we discover were created by Cid. In fact, in the Cosmos and Chaos reports that can be gained, it is told that Cid (a citized of Lufenia from FF I) is the one actually responsible for the creation of the entire world, as well as the god Chaos as well as the dragon Shinryu and the eternal conflict. It is theorized, though not directly stated, that the heroes and villains you play as are actually advanced versions of mannequins and not the actual characters themselves.

The presentation of the game is truely wonderful. Square really achieved a level of mastery with the PSP hardware that few others were able to. The game contains many FMV cutscenes which look wonderful, and would look so even on today's hardware. The actual gameplay is done in full 3D environments with destructible elements, quite advanced for the time, and it still holds up today. The models are slightly blocky, but again, good for the hardware it is running on.

The game contains multiple tracks from each of the games represented, and they all sound okay. Honestly, the fault with music in this game is how the difficulty swing in the game. You are either going to go through really short battles for grinding at which point you are hardly hearing any of the track, or really long fights which require alot fo concentration, during which you are most likely not paying attention to the track. Nevertheless, having all these tracks is a great thing and there is always the music player to listen to if you really want to.

Now we get to the game play section... and this is going to take a while. Let's start with the main gameplay. You choose a fighter from 22 possible candidates and face off against another character. You attack with either weak attacks which damage the character's bravery, or strong attacks which will directly attack their HP. Why would you want to use a weaker attack? Well, taking an opponent's bravery to 0 transfers a pool of Bravery into your pool, and the amount of damage you do on a strong attack is equivalent to the amount of Bravery you currently possess. The battle ends once someone reaches 0 HP.

Your character can be equipped with different attacks which are learned through levelling, and various traits and skills as well. These abilities and skills are equipped using CP and you have a maximum amount of CP that can be used at once. This is increased through levelling or by equipping certain accessories. That's right, your character can equip various weapons, armor, and accessories as well. These increase your stats, and there are also various sets of equipment which can bestow additional bonuses for your character and greatly affect your play style. Your character can also block or dodge attacks

Now, say you're not very good at fighting games, but can't pass up the Final Fantasy fighter, well Square has thought of this as well. They included a mode that turns the game into a menu based fighter. The game will do all the movements for you, and you can select when you want the character to use weak attacks, strong attacks, defend, dodge, etc.

The first thing I want to say, is that Square did a wonderful job making 22 characters with 22 different play styles. Each character really feels unique. Some are very stationery and rely on just using their strong attacks over and over. Some are fast and rely on combos. If you can't find a character that fits the style you want to play in this game, then you are just not looking hard enough.

When you start the game, you are most likely going to begin going through the Story modes. The story modes tell the story I spoke about above, with each character having a various little story about how they go about getting crystals. You have to fight many mannequins along the way along with the forces of Chaos. As you fight you will gain EXP, AP, PP, and Gil. Exp is what increases your character's level up to 100. Obviously, as you level you will gain various stats as well as access to different skills and attacks. AP goes to your equipped attacks and skills, and after enough AP you will master them, making them cost less CP to equip and sometimes unlocking other attacks or skills. PP and Gil are currencies that are used in two different shops.

The PP shop is where you unlock different things from the game. You must purchase the ability to use the villains in the game, as well as the ability to fight harder enemies in quick battles, or getting better bonuses, more music, stages, icons, etc. The gil shop is where you purchase the equipment and accessories in the game. Simple equipment can be purchased with just gil, while the better equipment uses a synthesis method where you need gil as well as other specific pieces of equipment to craft the better version... we will talk more about this later.

So, after you complete your story mode, you unlock a new story mode called Shade Impulse. This story mode takes place after all the warriors have obtained their crystals and follows to the final battle against Chaos. The mannequins here are much stronger than the ones in the initial stories as well. Defeating Chaos will unlock a new game mode as well as two new tales. These two tales introduce two characters, Shantotto from FF XI and Gabranth from FF XII. Completing these tales unlocks these characters for play as well as unlocking the final story tale called Inward Chaos. Here you fight super powerful enemies and is meant to be played at Max Level. The chaos at the end acts as kind of a super boss, and must be defeated to unlock some of the most powerful equipment in the game.

The new mode that is unlocked after beating Chaos for the first time is called Duel Colisseum. Here, you fight a never ending stream of enemies to gain medals. You can use these medals to purchase unique items and materials needed for crafting new weapons and armor in the shop. There are various levels of difficulty here each which carry their own unique items.

This all sounds simple enough, but let's go through what must be done if you wish to collect all the achievements in this game. To obtain all the achievements in the game, you must collect all the items in the game. All the weapons, armor, accessories, and materials. Your first step will be to finish the story modes for each character. Now, this must be done multiple times. Another system contained within the story modes is the DP system. Some mannequins have an addition objective such as defeating them without getting hit or within a certain amount of time, doing so will gain you DP at the end of the fight. Each time you open a chest or fight someone you will lose a DP. Each story mode has a reward for completing an area with each of 0-7 DP, these must all be collected, as well as every chest as some can contain unique items.

Next, obviously, you'll want to go through Shade Impulse and do the same thing, collect all the items and DP rewards and beating Chaos at the end to unlock Duel Colisseum and the two poistgame tales. These must also be completed and the DP rewards obtained.

At this point, you probably are not strong enough yet, so you should start going about collecting some better weapons, armor, and accessories. You'll find you need some specific materials for them, Most of these materials are obtained using Battlegen. Battlegen is a system where if you perform a specific action in battle such as hitting with a strong attack, sapping all of a foe's bravery, using a super move (called EX Burst), or destroying parts of the stage will give you a chance to obtain an item if you win the battle. The chance is based on how strong the enemy is and can be modified with certain accessories which will grant you a multiplier if certain conditions are met. These accessories are obtained from completing various achievements. These achievements range from completing story modes to reaching certain level milestones to performing 5000 blocks or destroying 20000 stage elements.

Yeah, here's where Square got a little crazy. Some of these achievements are so incredibly grindy. Some of these can be achieved with certain equipment setups and just leaving the game on in command mode, but there are two in particular, the dodging achievement and the stage element destroying achievement which you really have no choice but to grind for hours just to complete them. It is incredibly annoying and there's no way you'd reach these through the natural course of playing, you HAVE to go out of your way to complete it.

Anyway, you may discover that some items you want to create require colored gems to create. How do you get these? Well, every day you play, you will receive letters from Mognet, a cute little reference to FF IX, and the moogles will sometimes quiz you with questions on various things from any Final Fantasy game from I-X. If you get these quizzes correct, you will receive friend cards. Friend cards are a way that if you had friends that had Dissidia that you could store your information on another player's game to practice fighting against their character. The game also includes 8 NPC characters, each that associates with a specific color that contain unique battlegen items. Actually, this is not entirely true. There are also PASSWORDS you can find and input as your outgoing message, that will unlock other various friend cards that contain completely unique items to create unique weapons and armor in the shop. Thankfully, these are not required for the achievements.

You may notice that the shop contains some weapons that make reference to weapons from the previous Final Fantasy games. These weapons are very powerful and speicific to a character, but they require materials I've never seen before? Well, now's the time to head to the Duel Colisseum... you are going to spend HOURS here gaining countless items that only appear here. In fact, I have a bit of a grudge here. The PSP has great battery life and all, but this mode does not lend itself to portable play very well. You'll quickly find that you spend the first 15-20 minutes getting a really good setup with various job cards to the point where you can just keep purchasing items with running out of medals. It's far more effective to keep one run going and get ALL the items you need then to start over all the time... meaning you'd have to keep your PSP on the whole time, since you can't save in the middle of a colisseum run.

So, you're finally ready to take on Inward Chaos, and you win... you finish all the achievements you can think of, but you're still misisng some items... what's going on? Well, beating Inward Chaos unlocks the final mode in Duel Colisseum. The Blackjack course. If you want to get everything in the game, there are 22 items you can ONLY obtain here, and in a method we haven't talked about. When you defeat an enemy there is a SMALL chance you will obtain one of the items that character is equipped with. You see their equipment before you start any fight. The 22 pieces of Lufenian equipment here can only be obtained in this method. Hopefully, by now you've gotten very good, and have learned some setups to make defeating very powerful enemies quickly, because you'll need it. These characters are all Level 130... 30 levels above you.

This game may be a completionist's nightmare, but don't let that fact cloud the fact that this game is incredibly fun, and incredibly addicting. It was a very ambitious project for Square and they came through with flying colors. It is a very skill based game, and you'll really find yourself getting better as you continue to play. No fight shows this more than the fight against Chaos. When you first encounter him, he seems impossible except for brute strength, but eventually you'll learn his attacks, and he'll be nothing more than a minor nuisance when you face him the duel colisseum for the 357th time. I highly recommend that all Final Fantasy fans give this one a shot... at least through Shade Impulse. The completionist aspect of this game, while addictive, just takes too much grinding and frustration. That said, this game certainly holds up today, and I really look forward to the sequel and the improvements they made for it.
